I'd say you're right that the iPad may have more value than some of the lower-end Chromebooks of the past.

But it's important to keep in mind that newer and higher-end Chromebooks like the Pixelbook (my Chromebook of choice) allow you to access nearly all of the apps on the Google Play Store and they can run Linux with minimal tinkering.

Don't get me wrong, Macbooks are great. I use one nearly every day in addition to my Pixelbook. I'd say that having access to all of the Android apps at least puts some Chromebooks on par with the iPad (depending on which iPad we're talking about).

I still think the keyboard on my Pixelbook is the best keyboard I've ever used on a laptop. I much prefer typing long-form content on it over my MacBook. And the touch screen is great. I'm looking forward to a new MacBook with an improved keyboard and touchscreen!
